Manchester United delivered one of their most resilient performances of the season.
A patched-up side without Bruno Fernandes defeated Newcastle United 1–0, securing a gritty Premier League win without their captain.
Ruben Amorim’s team were stretched to their limit, missing more than half of their first-choice starters through injury and international duty.
Yet, they found a way to win through spirit, organisation, and one stunning goal from an unlikely hero. It was a result built on heart, patience, and structure rather than star power.

Manchester United finally wins without Bruno Fernandes
Manchester United had not won a Premier League game without Bruno Fernandes since March 2022. The 1–0 win over Newcastle finally ended that streak, proving they could still perform even without their most influential figure.
Fernandes was ruled out with a hamstring injury, adding to a long list of absentees that included Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Casemiro, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, and Kobbie Mainoo.
The team also lost Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui to international duty. Despite those setbacks, Amorim’s players stepped up when it mattered most.
Patrick Dorgu, deployed as an inverted right winger, scored the only goal of the match with a curling finish that lifted Old Trafford. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens faced 16 shots but kept his composure, helping United earn only its second clean sheet of the season.
It was a tactical triumph for Amorim, who switched to a back four for the first time since joining the club. The shape gave United more compactness, forcing Newcastle into wide areas while protecting their young back line.
Ruben Amorim’s depleted side showed character and balance
After the match, Amorim praised the togetherness that carried his team through the second half. Speaking to ESPN, he said the players “suffered together” and credited their defensive work for the clean sheet. “If we always have this spirit we are going to win so many games,” he said.
With only 33% possession, it was United’s lowest share in a Premier League victory since beating Manchester City in January 2023.
Yet, they made every moment count. Manuel Ugarte provided stability in midfield, while young Jack Fletcher impressed after replacing Mason Mount at half-time.
Every player understood their role, and the younger names responded to the challenge with maturity. For United, this win meant more than three points.
It proved they can survive without Fernandes and still control key moments. With the club up to fifth in the table, the performance offered hope that consistency and character might yet define their season.
