Luke Shaw, now in his 11th season with Manchester United, holds the title of the club’s longest-serving player.

When Luke Shaw arrived at Manchester United in 2014, expectations were sky-high for a glittering, trophy-laden career. More than a decade later, the left-back has certainly achieved longevity, becoming the club’s longest-serving current player — though his time at Old Trafford has been shaped as much by resilience as by silverware.

A devastating leg injury in 2015 dramatically altered his trajectory, contributing to the fact that Shaw only reached his 300th United appearance in 2025. Despite that, he has remained a regular presence in the first team, collecting multiple trophies and consistently earning the trust of successive managers, even if the Premier League title has continued to elude him.

Only David de Gea has been managed by more coaches at United

Across his United career, Shaw has now played under eight different managers, including caretaker appointments — a remarkable statistic that underlines both the club’s instability and his own staying power. That figure would stand as a club record, were it not for his former teammate David de Gea.

De Gea appeared under nine managers, the most of any player in Manchester United history: Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Ryan Giggs, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Michael Carrick, Ralf Rangnick, and Erik ten Hag. He was released by Ten Hag in 2023 after the FA Cup final defeat, closing a spell that saw him become a four-time Player of the Year and one of the finest goalkeepers in club history.

Shaw’s managerial list excludes the Ferguson and Moyes eras, instead spanning Van Gaal, Mourinho, Solskjær, Carrick, Rangnick, Ten Hag, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Ruben Amorim.
Phil Jones technically sat under nine managers as well, but he never made an appearance for either Carrick or Ten Hag due to injury.

Statistically, De Gea made the most appearances under Solskjær (120) and Mourinho (113), while Shaw’s peak manager pairing was also Solskjær (118 matches), followed by Ten Hag (62).

Shaw could yet equal the all-time mark

With Shaw contracted at United until 2027, there remains a realistic possibility he could match — or even surpass — De Gea’s unique record, especially given the inherent volatility of modern football management. While new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has publicly backed Ruben Amorim for the long term, history suggests stability at Old Trafford is never guaranteed.

Meanwhile, De Gea has found continuity in Italy, joining Fiorentina in 2024 after a year out of the game, working exclusively under Raffaele Palladino in Serie A.

For Shaw, the numbers already tell a story of extraordinary endurance. The question now is whether his United journey will stretch far enough to write one more unlikely chapter in the club’s record books.
