Archie Gray has left Leeds United and secured a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 18-year-old was one of Leeds United’s standout performers during the recently concluded campaign.

But Leeds’ Championship play-off final defeat to Southampton has now come at a cost because they have lost a highly-rated asset.

At the age of 15, Archie Gray was named on the bench for then-Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds against Arsenal in the Premier League and it was pretty clear where his career was going to head.

Given that Leeds runs in his blood, he would have preferred to have done it in the colours of his boyhood club and played in the top flight with them.

But now Tottenham are the fortunate ones to see where Gray’s career goes next and the reaction from his teammates is pretty telling.

Left-back Junior Firpo reacted to Gray’s Instagram post following his Spurs move and told him ‘you have everything’.

But he also sent a message to Spurs right-back Pedro Porro about his club’s new addition given that he spent several years playing and training alongside the teenager.

Gray’s preference and speciality is playing in the middle of the park, but during the recently concluded season, he was heavily used at right-back by Daniel Farke.

‘Go well, son,” said Firpo. “You have got everything.’ Before the Leeds man told Porro; ‘Take good care (of him), Pedro Porro.”

Porro responded: “Always, brother.”

Archie Gray under Ange Postecoglou

When Gray officially signed for the club, he expressed his love for manager Ange Postecoglou because he is a ‘massive Celtic fan’.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the Tottenham boss uses Gray because he can play multiple roles.

You would assume Porro will still be Tottenham’s starting right-back, with Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie making up the rest of the backline.

There’s no doubt that Gray can cover as a right-sided fullback, especially given that Postecoglou wants his fullbacks to come into midfield and play as number tens.

That makes him the perfect player for Postecoglou and then he can also use him as a number eight, with a more defensive brain behind him and James Maddison just ahead.

All in all, these should be exciting times ahead for Spurs because they have signed an absolute gem.
