Tottenham are said to be considering a reunion with Mauricio Pochettino as Antonio Conte is now expected to leave N17 this summer.
It was The Athletic who claimed that a return for the Argentine appeals to those in the boardroom at Spurs, while the South American himself would also be interested in coming back.
Now – with that in mind – a comment made by Gary Lineker from when Tottenham sacked Pochettino back in 2019 makes for very interesting reading.
What’s the story?
Well, the BBC Match of the Day host predicted that Spurs would not find anyone better than Pochettino.
As Daniel Levy considers bringing the 51-year-old back to north London, it would seem as if Lineker was spot on.
In full, the 62-year-old said: “Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked by Spurs. He helped the club to punch massively above their weight for years. Good luck with finding a better replacement…ain’t gonna happen.”
Tottenham have since experimented with proven winners such as José Mourinho and Conte, both of whom adopt wildly different approaches to Pochettino, while there was also a bizarre – and brief – stint in charge for Nuno Espirito Santo.
All of these appointments have failed miserably, and Levy now seems to be aware of his mistake in 2019 as a reunion with the Argentine seems very likely to happen.
Tottenham must back Pochettino this time
If Pochettino does return to Tottenham, Levy must back him in the market this time.
Spurs famously failed to make a single signing in the 2018/19 season as they reached the Champions League final against all odds, although that lack of investment eventually left Spurs with an underwhelming squad.
Tottenham could certainly do with some new central defenders as the likes of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez struggle, so if Pochettino does return, he cannot be expected to work miracles again without some financial backing.
