Mike Tannenbaum has suggested the Kansas City Chiefs face a ‘difficult’ but necessary decision regarding Travis Kelce’s future.

The former NFL executive, now an ESPN analyst, offered a blunt assessment of Kelce’s trajectory, arguing that Kansas City must think ahead rather than rely on past greatness.

Mike Tannenbaum did not shy away from naming the decision he believes Kansas City must consider. SportsCenter on X shared Tannenbaum’s remarks about the Chiefs’ tight end.

“I would move on from Travis Kelce and let me tell you why, When you’re in the front office, you have to project what a player is going to do, not what they’ve done,” Tannenbaum began.

He added: “I’ve made that mistake countless times in my career and Travis Kelce is a first ballot Hall of Famer.

“But when you watch him and make an honest and sober evaluation of his 2025 performance, clearly his best days are behind him.”

Tannenbaum’s stance is rooted in roster projection. As a former general manager, he framed the situation through the lens of long-term planning rather than sentiment.

Kelce’s legacy in Kansas City is secure, but the evaluation focuses on what he will be moving forward, not what he has already accomplished.

Kansas City Chiefs urged to prioritise youth and explosiveness

Tannenbaum also linked the decision to Kansas City’s broader offensive challenges. He pointed directly to the need for more big play capability.

“We talk about their lack of explosive plays,” he added. “If I was Kansas City, I would make the right, albeit difficult, decision to move on from Travis Kelce and probably get younger, faster, more explosive at the tight end position.”

The argument suggests that the Chiefs’ offense, long built around the Mahomes-Kelce partnership, may require a shift in identity to remain among the AFC’s elite.

Speed and vertical threat are increasingly critical in today’s game, and Tannenbaum believes that evolution could mean parting ways with a franchise icon.

Whether Kansas City ultimately follows that path remains uncertain, but Tannenbaum’s comments ensure the conversation around Kelce’s future is now firmly in the spotlight.
