What did Jurgen Klopp say to Paul Tierney after a Liverpool game last season?

The Premier League referee himself is bound to have been thinking about a hostile interaction with the Reds manager recently.

That’s because Tierney is taking charge of Liverpool’s Premier League visit to Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

This time last season, the official infuriated Klopp following a 2-2 draw away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Tierney only booked Harry Kane for an awful studs-up challenge on Andy Robertson, with the Scot later being sent off.

The Liverpool boss was also furious when Tierney elected against awarding Klopp’s side a penalty when Emerson Royal bundled over Diogo Jota in the box.

What did Jurgen Klopp say to Paul Tierney?

After the game, Klopp is reported to have said to Tierney, as quoted by The Standard: “I have no problems with referees, only you.”

At the time, HITC Sport covered Liverpool fan reaction to Klopp’s angry confrontation with the Premier League referee.

Paul Tierney record in Liverpool games

The 42-year-old referee doesn’t often preside of winning Liverpool fixtures.

In fact, Transfermarkt has stated that Tierney has officiated a total of 20 Reds outings in the Premier League, only 10 of which have resulted in victories.

His two prior Premier League games for Liverpool this season have been the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in August, in which Darwin Nunez was sent off for a headbutt, and the 1-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest in October.

However, the Anfield outfit have victory in their own hands tonight and hopefully for Klopp’s and his team’s sake, there’s no controversial talking point regarding a refereeing decision after the 90 minutes.
