Jose Enrique has praised Joe Gomez for his FA Cup display during Liverpool’s 1-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, as he posted on the player’s Instagram.

The 24-year-old started just his eighth game of the season on Sunday and played out at right-back for Liverpool, with Trent Alexander-Arnold nursing an injury.

After the game, Gomez simply posted on his Instagram ‘onto Wembley’, with Enrique adding in the comments section the following message:

“What a game amigo,” said Enrique. “Very happy for you.”

It’s going to be interesting to see what happens with Gomez in the summer because there is talk of him possibly leaving.

On one hand, the ball-carrying centre-back is playing for one of the top sides in world football, where it’s proven this season, they are in the hunt to win every trophy possible.

But, at the end of the day, a player of his calibre needs to be starting more than just eight matches.

Prior to Gomez’s long-term injury, he was an England international and a regular partner at the back for Virgil van Dijk.

But that has now flipped on its head because he is no longer part of the England set-up and behind Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip in the centre-back pecking order.

Ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Gomez can’t afford to be in this situation at the start of next season because he has to be pushing for an England spot.

The only way to do that is to earn regular minutes and it seems as though he won’t be getting that at Anfield, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him head for the exit door.
