This time last year, West Ham fans were desperate to get Eddie Howe in as their new manager.
Cast your mind back to November 2019, and the Hammers faced the very real threat of relegation, and in their battle to stay in the Premier League, they decided to sack Manuel Pellegrini.
As you could imagine, this decision started a whirlwind of speculation, and fans were quick to name the man they wanted to take charge at the London Stadium.
The manager Hammers fans were eyeing up was Eddie Howe.
Of course, Howe would go on to get relegated with Bournemouth while David Moyes would take charge at West Ham and lead them to safety, so it’s fair to say that the club made the right decision.
Now, we’re not going to say that Howe is a bad manager, he is a three-time Premier League Manager of the Month, and a former LMA Manager of the Season, but the fact that he didn’t manage to keep Bournemouth up last season shows that he wasn’t the man for the job at the time.
It says a lot that Howe has resigned from Bournemouth and taken a break from football management, he seemingly was getting burnt out by the pressures of the job, and if he’d taken charge at West Ham, we could now be talking about a Championship club.
Was David Moyes the most inspired appointment in the world? Of course he wasn’t, he was a former manager who doesn’t play the most exciting brand of football, but he knew the players and he had bags of experience in these types of situations.
Eddie Howe may one day become a top-class Premier League manager, but this time last year it may have been a case of the wrong place at the wrong time if he’d have taken charge at West Ham.
