Arsenal were reportedly offered the chance to sign PSG attacker Mauro Icardi in the January transfer window.

According to the Athletic, the UEFA Champions League titans proposed a swap deal with Arsenal involving the Argentine striker, with PSG eager to offload Icardi this year.

The former Inter Milan star has struggled for regular minutes this season in Paris, with Mauricio Pochettino desperate to sell Icardi given the forward’s hefty salary, and PSG identified Arsenal as a potential buyer.

The north London side were desperate to sign a striker in January, however, Arsenal declined the option to sign Icardi last month, with the forward far from what the Gunners are looking for.

As per the report, Arsenal have a set list of targets who they want to fill in as striker, and their stance was either those on their radar or nobody at all, hence the rejection of Icardi.

PSG shelled out £45m for Icardi in 2020 as per the Guardian, and whilst the striker is clearly a player with talent and the qualities to star at the top-level, Arsenal would have been a poor choice of club for the former Serie A star.

Arsenal’s transfer plan established last summer has been clear, sign young players who can grow into Mikel Arteta’s system, and given Icardi’s age and style of player, supporters are buzzing that the club are sticking to the plan.

Arteta’s side have shown signs of immense promise this season, and fans are hopeful that the club can sign the perfect striker in the summer to lead the line for many years to come.
