A controversial Kieran Trippier tackle was among the talking points tonight during Newcastle United’s fascinating draw with Manchester City.

The Magpies held the Premier League champions to a point at St James’s Park this evening.

Newcastle were 3-1 ahead at one point, but a second-half double from Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva preserved the Sky Blues’ unbeaten start to the new Premier League campaign.

The hosts could’ve only had 10 men with 15 minutes left after a Trippier tackle was punishable by a red card.

However, the referee overruled his own decision and downgraded it to a booking, permitting the former Tottenham Hotspur defender to stay on the field.

It was a relatively high challenge on Kevin de Bruyne, not necessarily a dangerous one.

And here’s how John Terry reacted on Twitter:

Trippier, a £25 million signing in January, scored Newcastle’s third of the evening.

This is a massive player for Eddie Howe and it’s extremely likely that Pep Guardiola’s side would’ve returned to Manchester with three points if the England international was off the field for the final quarter.

Jamie Carragher offered an alternative view, arguing that it’ll be considered a red card in the near future due to how cynical it was.

This Kieran Trippier tackle certainly wasn’t going to injure De Bruyne, however, and the right decision was probably made.
