Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been discussing Douglas Luiz after Aston Villa hired Unai Emery.
Wright was running through Villa’s squad and how they’ll fit into Emery’s system, and he discussed Luiz’s ability, noting that he’s a very good player who was deemed to be worthy of playing for Arsenal in the summer.
Indeed, the Gunners tried their hardest to sign the Brazilian on deadline day, bidding no fewer than three times for the Aston Villa midfielder, but sadly for the north London club their attempts were knocked back.
Wright acknowledges that Arsenal have missed out on a ‘very good’ player, conceding that the Gunners’ loss is Villa’s gain.

Wright praises Luiz
The pundit gave his view on the midfield maestro.
“They have flair players, look at someone like Douglas Luiz, we were trying to get him, that’s how good he is, he is very good. Leon Bailey, you’ve seen how good he is,” Wright said.
Building blocks
The fact that Villa have players like Luiz, Bailey, Philippe Coutinho and John McGinn should make Unai Emery’s life at Villa Park rather easy.
Make no mistake about it, this isn’t a team that belongs in the bottom half of the Premier League table, and, in all honesty, if Emery can just get all of his players playing at their best they should rocket up the table.
Of course, that is easier said than done, but the reality is that Villa have plenty of players who the big six would happily take – as Arsenal’s interest in Luiz this summer has shown.
Unfortunately for Arsenal, their chance to land the Brazilian has seemingly been and gone after he signed a new contract with the Villans earlier this month.
