Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has thrown a dig at Liverpool, while discussing whether they can finish in the top 4 at the end of the season.

The England international openly said that if it was not for Eddie Howe’s side being underwhelming on the day, Jurgen Klopp’s side would have struggled to beat them in their recent 2-0 victory. Jurgen Klopp, who recently praised the 30-year-old may be disappointed to hear his views.

However, Callum Wilson has said it as it is about whether Liverpool can finish in the top 4, referencing back to them being potentially fortunate to beat Newcastle recently.

Well, Jamie Carragher may be inclined to agree as he felt Alisson Becker was the Reds’ ‘best player’ and Allan Saint-Maximin was the standout player on the pitch, despite the hosts having 10 men after Nick Pope’s sending off.

However, in conversation with Michail Antonio on BBC’s Footballers’ Football Podcast, Callum Wilson did not mince his words when breaking down whether Liverpool can make it into the top 4, saying, “You’re trying to say, ‘are Liverpool back?’ They’ve won 2 games over the last couple of weeks, and we technically let them win because it was a poor performance from our point of view.”

Don’t shoot the messenger

As proven against Real Madrid in what was rightfully labelled as an ‘embarrassing’ performance by Jurgen Klopp and Co. in their 5-2 defeat in the Champions League, they are far from the back.

And as Callum Wilson said, Liverpool were perhaps lucky not to concede even once against Newcastle and still look miles away from a side that can go on a run to secure their place in the top 4.

While the Kop faithful may read these comments with raised eyebrows, it is hard to disagree.
