Along with the title, the Premier League’s Golden Boot award will be decided this weekend as Mohamed Salah of Liverpool looks to pip Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-min.
How many Premier League goals does Salah have this season?
The Liverpool forward has 22 goals in the Premier League this season, one more than his Spurs rival.
But the Tottenham star – a £22 million signing in 2015 – could well wind up nicking the award nonetheless and that’s because Salah’s participation in the final game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday is in some doubt.
The Egypt international went off injured in the FA Cup final last week and with Jurgen Klopp’s side having a Champions League final next weekend, the German manager is adamant that he will not risk his star player against Wolves this weekend, adding that the player himself is in agreement.
He told Liverpool’s official website: ” I actually understand 100 per cent the goalscoring battle with Heung-min Son but we have no chance that we take any risks. But Mo doesn’t want to take any risks, there is no doubt about that.”
Golden Boot
It’s a difficult decision for the German manager.
That’s because Liverpool have to win against Wolves at Anfield to maximise their chances of pipping Manchester City to the Premier League title, with Pep Guardiola’s side – who face Aston Villa on Sunday – sitting one point ahead of them.
Clearly the Reds’ chances of victory increase if Salah plays but, as Klopp pointed out, there is certainly a risk and if the Tottenham player wins the Golden Boot award as a result of Klopp playing it safe then, well, so be it.
Deep down, there’s no doubt that Salah – labelled ‘selfish’ by Alan Shearer last month – will want to finish top of the goalscoring table too, but there are priorities and it’s also undeniable that team trophies are more important than individual ones.
