Speaking on Peter Crouch’s podcast, Alan Shearer has named Mohamed Salah amongst the great goalscorers in recent history who are selfish.
Football is a team game, but for some, individual accolades mean a lot, and according to Shearer, all of the great goalscorers are selfish in that they want to be the ones scoring all of the goals.
Shearer says that every great striker has that trait, from Cristiano Ronaldo, to Lionel Messi and even Mo Salah.
What’s been said?
Shearer was speaking about the art of being a goalscorer.
“Name me one goalscorer who isn’t selfish. All throughout the years whether it’s Ronaldo, Messi, Mohamed Salah or Kane, every single one of them is selfish in a good way, in terms of being a great goalscorer and you have to have the mentality,” Shearer said.
“That’s the way it is, it always has been and it always will be for a centre-forward.”

Drive
Is Mo Salah a selfish footballer? Sometimes, yes.
However, if the pursuit of individual awards and records is what drives him to be arguably the best player on the planet then so be it.
At the end of the day, Salah’s selfishness hasn’t hampered Liverpool one bit. Yes, there are times when he could look to pass instead of shooting, but those moments only occur when Liverpool are dominating or a game is already won.
Salah may be selfish at times, but overall, he’s a great team player. He tracks back brilliantly, and his assist stats this season just go to show how willing he is to do his bit for his teammates.
Selfishness isn’t necessarily a sin in football. As Shearer says, sometimes, you need to have that mentality to be a truly great goalscorer.
