According to Florian Plettenburg, Christopher Nkunku did not undergo a medical to finalise a deal with Chelsea as Liverpool target the RB Leipzig forward.

Good news for Liverpool in Christopher Nkunku race

Well, Fussball Transfers revealed yesterday that Liverpool and Real Madrid are not giving up hope of signing the France international, despite the fact Chelsea appeared to have made serious progress.

It was Bild who claimed that Nkunku had already done medical examinations with the Blues ahead of a move to Stamford Bridge in 2023, although Plettenburg – a journalist for Sky Sports Germany – has now disputed that story.

Writing on Twitter, Plettenburg claimed: “We have been told that it was not a medical in order to finalise a deal with Chelsea. It should have taken place due to insurance reasons. Yes, Chelsea wants him in 2023 but no decision yet, no signing of a pre-contract so far. But release clause!”

Interestingly – as you can see – the Sky Sports Germany journalist does confirm that Nkunku has a release clause.

According to Fussball Transfers, the clause is worth €60m (£53m).

Interest in Nkunku comes after he began the 2022/23 season in fine fashion, scoring six goals in 11 games across all competitions so far.

Liverpool must trigger Christopher Nkunku release clause

In our view, Liverpool would be foolish not to trigger Nkunku’s £53m release clause.

The Frenchman remarkably registered 55 goal involvements in just 52 appearances last season, in the form of 35 goals and 20 assists.

Few footballers on the planet were so heavily involved in the final third, and at the age of just 24, he would represent a solid long-term investment for the Reds.

Nkunku’s numbers were up there with Haaland last season, and Manchester City took advantage by triggering the Norway international’s £51m release clause.

Now, it’s time for Liverpool to act in similarly ruthless fashion – they simply cannot ignore this opportunity in 2023.
