Wayne Rooney has admitted he would like to see one Newcastle United ace be given more of a chance at Euro 2024.

Several Newcastle United stars have been included in the European Championship with key players hoping to prove themselves during the tournament held in Germany.

The likes of Fabian Schar, Martin Dubravka, Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon have been included in their respective international squads this summer.

England, under Gareth Southgate, have struggled so far with the Three Lions labouring to a 1-1 draw against Denmark in their second group game but qualification to the knockout stage is 99.9 per cent guaranteed.

Rooney keen on seeing Gordon being given a chance

Wayne Rooney has been speaking on the BBC in the aftermath of England’s disappointing draw against Denmark.

After Harry Kane had given the Three Lions the lead early in the first half, Denmark rallied and were level thanks to a stunning equaliser from Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand.

Rooney believes that changes need to be made for their final group game against Slovenia and has suggested that Anthony Gordon has to be given a starting role.

When discussing the midfield problems, Rooney said: “When the squad was announced I wondered where do you fit Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden into the same team, and I think that’s shown.

“For me [Southgate] should be playing Bellingham a little bit deeper and give Foden the freedom.

“I’d really like to see Anthony Gordon in there. I love Trent Alexander-Arnold as a player, but in midfield there’s better options.”

Gordon deserves chance to impress under Southgate

A winger with bundles of pace, energy and willingness to go in behind the last line of the defence is something that this current iteration of England do not have.

Gordon in place of Phil Foden on that left-hand side, which offers an outlet for Kane to find consistently could be the key to help England push up the pitch.

The Newcastle winger was at his electric best under Eddie Howe last season as he scored 11 Premier League goals and provided 10 assists in England’s top division.
