Wayne Rooney and Clarence Seedorf have strongly criticised Jose Mourinho after his comments about Vinicius Jr. following the controversy against Benfica.
The fallout from Real Madrid’s heated Champions League clash has continued to escalate, with Mourinho’s remarks drawing sharp responses from two former football greats who believe the Portuguese manager crossed a line.
Wayne Rooney and Clarence Seedorf condemn Jose Mourinho’s remarks

Criticism of Jose Mourinho intensified after his comments on Vinicius Jr. in the aftermath of the Benfica incident. The Independent detailed the backlash directed at Mourinho’s assessment of the situation.
“As he said he’s trying to stay independent but I think it was very unfair what he said about Vinicius,” Rooney said.
Rooney’s view was clear, suggesting Mourinho’s framing of the episode lacked balance, given the seriousness of the allegations surrounding the match.
“I think he’s [Jose Mourinho] is still emotional. I think he made a big mistake today to justify racial abuse and I’m not saying that was the case today but he mentioned something more than today,” Seedorf said.
“He said wherever he goes these things happen, so he’s saying it’s okay when Vinicius provokes you, that is it okay to be racist and I think that is very wrong,” he added.
Seedorf went further, arguing that any implication connecting provocation to discriminatory behaviour was unacceptable. Both former players stressed that accountability and clarity are essential when incidents of alleged racism are involved.
Jose Mourinho defends his stance on Vinicius Jr
Mourinho suggested the focus should have remained on the quality of Vinicius Jr’s goal rather than the controversy that followed.
“It should be the crazy moment of the game, an amazing goal in a good game… these talents are able to do these beautiful things, but unfortunately he [Vinicius] was not just happy to score that astonishing goal and then the game was over.
“When you score a goal like that you celebrate in a respectful way,” Mourinho said after the match.
His comments implied that the manner of the celebration contributed to the tension, a perspective that has divided opinion. Critics argue that linking celebration style to subsequent incidents risks shifting attention away from the core issue.
The debate now extends beyond the match itself, highlighting once again how quickly football discussions can move from sporting brilliance to broader questions about conduct and responsibility.
