Jamie Carragher has responded to Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese coach criticised Vinicius Jr.’s celebration against Benfica.

Mourinho questioned why the Real Madrid winger did not celebrate his wonder goal “with just the happiness of being a great player.”

Carragher argued that the criticism was difficult to square with Mourinho’s own history on the touchline. The back and forth has added another dimension to the aftermath of a tense Champions League fixture.

Carragher says Mourinho criticism is “a bit rich”

Speaking after Mourinho’s remarks about Vinicius Jr.’s celebration, Jamie Carragher defended the Brazilian’s right to express himself.

The former Liverpool defender said players should be free to react naturally to major moments. He then referenced Mourinho’s past behaviour during high-stakes matches.

“Anyone celebrates how they like… It feels a little bit rich coming from Mourinho… This is a guy who celebrates and antagonizes the opposition probably more than any coach has ever done.”

“You remember him, running down the touchline. I remember in a cup final against Liverpool, where Chelsea scored very late, he was telling Liverpool supporters to shut up, cupping his ears.”

“It’s a bit rich coming from him to have a pop at Vinicius Jr. for his celebration. He’s more than entitled to celebrate how he likes.”

Carragher’s comments portrayed Mourinho’s stance as inconsistent with his own animated history on the sidelines. His argument focused on principle rather than the specific details of the celebration.

Debate continues over Vinicius Jr.’s reaction

Vinicius Jr.’s celebration followed a standout goal in Real Madrid’s Champions League playoff round match against Benfica. The game itself carried added tension because of the surrounding controversy.

Mourinho’s remarks shifted attention toward sportsmanship, while Carragher’s response emphasized player freedom. The contrasting views illustrate how quickly post-match narratives can take shape.

The episode reflects a broader discussion in modern football about emotion and expression on the pitch. With prominent figures weighing in, the debate has extended beyond the match itself.

As reactions continue, attention remains divided between the quality of Vinicius Jr.’s goal and the interpretation of his celebration. Carragher’s intervention ensured Mourinho’s criticism did not go unanswered.
