Kalvin Phillips has admitted to the Daily Mail that he understands why Marcelo Bielsa took him off at half-time in Leeds United’s draw with Brighton, but he was not happy about it.
The Whites clung on to leave the Amex Stadium with a point last month after the Seagulls wasted numerous chances. Of Graham Potter’s side’s 20 attempts on Illan Meslier’s goal, they only directed four on-target, per WhoScored. Instead, 14 failed to find to mark.
Tariq Lamptey and Marc Guehi gave Brighton a great foundation to build from with their overlapping runs from full-back. The Seagulls’ movement in midfield and crisp passing also caused the Whites numerous problems, with Phillips having to occupy a centre-back role.

Bielsa was without Luke Ayling, Jamie Shackleton and Robin Koch on the south coast, with injuries biting hard. It also meant he had to play centre-half Diego Llorente at right-back.
Phillips opens up on Brighton substitution
Bielsa fielding Phillips at centre-half, like against Brighton, is not an uncommon sight during the Argentine’s time at Leeds. But the England midfielder could not cope with Neal Maupay and struggled to find consistency once Bielsa asked him to move into the engine room.
Phillips accepts Bielsa has unyielding standards for performances, and his against Brighton was below the Leeds boss’ level. But he also admits going off at half-time was frustrating.
“Me and Marcelo get on well,” Phillips said. “He doesn’t accept anything less than 100 per cent. Sometimes he thinks I’m giving that, and sometimes he doesn’t. I respect that, that makes me go home and think about ways I can get better.

“Last month there was a stage when I wasn’t playing great. I was subbed off at half-time at Brighton. I wasn’t happy, but I knew why he had done it. If I didn’t, then he was always going to tell me.
“For people to say we’d had a bust-up, it’s nonsense. The manager is someone you don’t want to get on the wrong side of and I don’t want to let him down. I want to do the best I can for him because he’s given me so much.”
Phillips has only featured twice since Leeds’ draw with Brighton after sustaining an injury in their draw with Brentford. The Bees marked his 12th outing in 14 Premier League games.
Bielsa will hope Phillips can rediscover his best form once the Leeds product returns to the fold. The midfielder, too, will be keen to bounce back soon to help the Whites’ survival bid.
