If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were to press the Manchester United reset button, now might be a good time to do so.

Three defeats in the last four games is not ideal preparation for the Champions League home tie against Villarreal tomorrow.

Successive 1-0 losses to West Ham United and Aston Villa have left United in something of a slump.

Out of one cup competition and dropped to fourth in the Premier League, a win on Wednesday could not come sooner.

And there is plenty riding on the visit from Villarreal.

Qualification from the group is certainly top of the agenda.

After being overturned by Young Boys on matchday one, Solskjaer’s side are already facing an uphill battle to reach the knockouts.

They will be well aware of the Spaniard’s quality following the Europa League final downfall last season.

Next up is Atalanta, another exciting package that only recently burst onto the continental scene but knows how to execute a damaging blow.

Therefore, anything other than three points versus Villarreal won’t be enough to calm United’s nerves.

Major Manchester United month ahead

Failure to be triumphant and they will have started arguably the trickiest month of their campaign in the worst fashion.

After Villarreal is a league clash with in-form Everton, who Rafa Benitez has transformed into a potential banana skin team.

That’s probably a little harsh; the Toffees are level on points with United, only below them on goal difference.

Then, a trip to Leicester City, who, despite their downturn in results, simply cannot be underestimated.

Atalanta follows the Foxes four days later before Old Trafford hosts Liverpool.

By that stage, Solskjaer could be flying high once again or staring down the managerial sacking barrel.

A trip to Tottenham Hotspur is the last game in October and potentially the only fixture that currently guarantees a United victory.

Just tickling the toes in November, Atalanta and then Manchester City await before the international break.

A break might be what United need by that stage.

Solskjaer may need a holiday himself. That’s if he’s not put on permanent leave by then.

Some of his players could be looking at the prices of flights from Manchester airport, in particular Anthony Martial and Juan Mata.
