Viktor Gyokeres is set to join Arsenal in a £69m deal from Sporting, ending any rumours of a reunion with Ruben Amorim at Manchester United.
The Swedish striker, who scored 66 goals in 68 games under Amorim at Sporting, has been one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards.
Amorim has had plenty of links to Sporting players since taking over at Old Trafford, with Ousmane Diomande and Francisco Trincao both rumoured to be on United’s radar.
But Gyokeres was always going to be a stretch. Out of European competitions this season, United lost ground in the race for Sporting’s top scorer. Now Arsenal appear to be closing in on signing him.
Viktor Gyokeres to Man United links set to end

According to Swedish outlet Aftonbladet, a deal worth around £69m is now close, with Gyokeres pushing for the move.
Fabrizio Romano has also reported that Arsenal are now ‘getting closer’ to an agreement after a new round of talks with Sporting.
The Gunners need a reliable goalscorer after Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus struggled to provide the cutting edge they needed last season.

Incredible chance for Viktor Gyokeres to impress on day one
Once the deal goes through, Gyokeres could make his debut for Arsenal against Manchester United on the opening day of the new Premier League season.
He’ll come face-to-face with Amorim, a manager who played a key role in shaping his career at Sporting.
Gabriel Heinze, who had a brief and somewhat controversial spell at Old Trafford, will be another new face in the game, as he becomes part of Arteta’s coaching staff and will bring a wealth of experience to the touchline.
All the attention will be on Gyokeres, though, as United fans get a close look at the striker who could have led their line this summer.
