Ollie Watkins and Bryan Mbeumo could be reunited at Old Trafford
The two share a long history together, having linked up in Brentford’s attack back in 2019-20. Mbeumo arrived from Troyes in July that year, just after Watkins had switched to a centre-forward role under Thomas Frank.
Watkins hit 25 goals that season, while Mbeumo scored 15, but Brentford lost the Championship play-off final. Since then, the striker has moved to Aston Villa, while the Cameroonian international has remained at the Bees.
Now, five years later, a return to the same forward line could be possible, but in a very different setting.
United are looking to restructure their attack after struggling for goals last season. Mbeumo is already a reported priority, while Watkins would offer a reliable option up front – particularly if Rasmus Hojlund were to move on.

There were even Liverpool comparisons thrown around at the time. Mbeumo once responded to talk about Brentford’s own “BMW” front three – adding that he’d prefer an Audi but offering a familiar Premier League spin on the discussion.
The comment always felt more like a light intonation for Mbeumo, rather than a direct comparison – but he noted that Benrahma most resembled Firmino in the group and added a light comparison between himself and Mane, with Watkins as Salah.
“Said would be Roberto Firmino, very attacking, a good finisher. I think it would be hard to say who is who among Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, but I would probably be Mane and Ollie would be Salah,” said the Cameroonian international.
The duo’s club path hasn’t intertwined often since that Brentford season – but next year, Amorim could look to get two of his former players scoring together at Old Trafford.
