With the Championship title race finely poised between Newcastle United and Brighton, who will come out on top? Derby County fans give their verdict…
With the race for promotion hotting up by the weekend, two teams at the top of the Championship appear to be firmly leading the charge for the Premier League. As many expected, Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United are right at the forefront of thing, sitting at the top of the table on 64 points. However, former Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton, who now manages Brighton & Hove Albion, is hot on the chase of the Magpies, sitting in second just one point behind his old club.
But who will get the top spot? Despite the gap between these two clubs at the top six, there are still some other teams who might throw a cat amongst the pigeons in the final weeks. Jaap Stam’s Reading are still in tremendous form, whereas Garry Monk’s Leeds United and David Wagner’s Huddersfield Town might have something to say about the title race before it’s end.
One team who are unlikely to get one of the top two spots are Derby County. Despite their tremendous turnaround in form since the return of another former Newcastle United boss, Steve McClaren, the Rams are busy fighting for a place in the play-offs, rather than the top two. So, HITC Sport asked Derby County fans for their views on who will win the race to the top spot…

“Newcastle, definitely Newcastle” said one Derby County fan, “with Rafa Benitez in charge it’s hard to look past them.” Another Derby County fan added “they beat Derby mate, so they’re bound to go up.”
One Derby County fan also suggested that he thought Brighton & Hove Albion would “fall away, they always do.” Another also added that “they’ve [Brighton] proved before that they don’t quite have enough to push them over the line.” Strong words from Derby fans, who have seen their club do the same over the last few years.
Another Derby fan mentioned that if Newcastle United don’t win it, they could well “do another Leeds United…they could drop like a stone, because the big money players…I can’t seem them staying.”
