With Aleksandar Mitrovic having come under-fire for a series of misses in the FA Cup defeat to Oxford United, does the Serbian have a future at Newcastle United?
As many expected, Newcastle United have had an excellent season so far in the Championship. Looking for an instant promotion back to the Premier League under manager Rafa Benitez, the Magpies are currently sat at the top of the league, above Chris Hughton’s Brighton and Hove Albion.
Their rise to the top has been down, in most part, to the form and goals of new signings Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle. Together, the pair have scored 22 goals, with the latter keeping Serbian forward Aleksandar Mitrovic out of the team.
Struggling to compete with Gayle, and behind the pecking order to Daryl Murphy as well now, does Mitrovic realistically have a future at St James’ Park? HITC Sport asked Newcastle United fans for their thoughts…
Newcastle United’s Aleksandar Mitrovic looks dejected
“He’s still got a major part to play in the team” said one Newcastle United fan, who didn’t want to see the Magpies let the Serbian go. “He needs to control how he plays football” added another, who clearly feels Mitrovic needs to put a bit more focus into his game, and cool off on his disciplinary problems.
“He looked like he was gonna be great when he first came” added a few Newcastle United fans, but has the Serbian really lived up to the hype? He’s not scored a goal since October.
“I still think he can do it in this league. He’s a decent player, just needs a run of games” added another, with many Newcastle United fans sharing in the sentiment that, eventually, the Serbian will come good.
