Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, David Seaman has been discussing the Arsenal captaincy and he’s suggested Aaron Ramsdale as a potential candidate.

Ramsdale certainly has the personality to be the captain. He’s very quickly endeared himself the Arsenal fanbase by riling up opposition fans and celebrating passionately, while Seaman knows him well from the recent goalkeeping training he’s been doing at Colney.

It would be rather strange to see Ramsdale given the captaincy after only signing in the summer, while Seaman says that you very rarely see a goalkeeper as a captain.

What’s Seaman said about Ramsdale?

Seaman named the former Sheffield United man in his list of candidates to be Arsenal skipper.

“I don’t know. People like Tierney and Ben White. Gabriel maybe? You know, they’re leaders. You even look at Aaron Ramsdale, you know, but you very rarely see goalkeepers being captain, but I didn’t lift a trophy though. It’s difficult because you need to choose someone who’s respected by the lads, you’re not just captain on the field, you’re captain off the field,” Seaman said.

Rare, but successful

Seaman is right when he says it’s rare to see a goalkeeper as a captain, but, perhaps strangely, goalkeeping captains are rather successful.

Two of the last three World Cup-winning captains have been goalkeepers – Hugo Lloris and Iker Casillas. While Manuel Neuer captained Bayern Munich to a Champions League in 2020.

History is actually littered with great goalkeeping captains, from Dino Zoff to Gianluigi Buffon, and after Ramsdale’s brilliant start at Arsenal, there’s no reason why he couldn’t join this prestigious list one day.

If Mikel Arteta thinks Ramsdale’s personality is a good fit, he shouldn’t hesitate to give his goalkeeper the armband.
