Tottenham are said to be considering a move for Luis Enrique to replace Antonio Conte – if it happens, there could be a lifeline for Bryan Gil.
What’s the story?
Well – according to The Athletic – Enrique is currently the leading contender to replace Conte at Spurs.
In our view, Gil will be hoping that the 52-year-old does end up in north London, as it could revive his career at Tottenham.
The Spain international has struggled in N17 since Nuno Espirito Santo signed him from Sevilla in a £21.6m deal back in July 2021, which also saw Erik Lamela join the Spanish outfit in return.
Gil, who was handed a contract worth £83,000-a-week, has only made 31 appearances in total for Tottenham, while also being shipped out on loan to Valencia and Sevilla since Conte took over.
However, Enrique seems to be a huge admirer of the 22-year-old.
As quoted by The Times, he said: “The first time we spoke I could see he’s very mature and calm but with that youthful energy that takes you by surprise. As a footballer I don’t want to change him.
“He has confidence, he beats people. He plays with both feet, he has vision, he doesn’t lose the ball. He can improve in front of goal but he can also cross and shoot, and defensively he’s intense in the press. We’re a pressing team, we take risks, and he understands that very well.”
These comments came before Enrique handed Gil his debut for Spain in March 2021.
Gil could thrive under Enrique at Tottenham
Gil, an old fashioned winger who tends to stay out wide and hug the touchline, never really had a place in Conte’s system as the Italian preferred wing-backs to carry out that task.

However, Enrique prefers to use a 4-3-3 formation with room for a natural wide man like Gil, so there is an opportunity for him to finally thrive in north London if the Spaniard is appointed by Daniel Levy.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Enrique would be quite simple to hire given the fact he is currently unemployed after leaving the Spanish national team in December.
