Andros Townsend has claimed that Everton are ‘very lucky’ to have kept Anthony Gordon after summer transfer rumours involving Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

The 31-year-old claimed that Gordon has been ‘very good’ for Frank Lampard’s side this season and the Everton star can become a ‘top’ Premier League footballer.

During the 2022 summer transfer window, there was talk of Gordon possibly heading for the Goodison Park exit door.

Chelsea spent a crazy amount of money during the summer transfer window – the most any English team has spent in history – and one of their targets was Gordon.

The London club weren’t the only English side, nor the only team in the capital vying for his signature, because even Spurs were lurking in the corner.

In the end, Gordon stayed put and it has seemingly been a sigh of relief, as Townsend praised the rising English star on talkSPORT.

“He’s been very good,” said Townsend. “He burst onto the scene last season. People said ‘can he do it again?’ and ‘can he add goals to his game?’

“He’s a got a couple of goals to his name. We are very lucky to have kept him in the transfer window. There were one or two rumours. We are happy that we have him for another year.

“Hopefully, he will continue to develop the way he has and become a top Premier League player.”

WILL GORDON SIGN A NEW DEAL?

Gordon made the right call to stay at his boyhood club because it will help his progression rather than join a team that would have probably seen him sit on the bench.

That’s proven by the fact that Chelsea, who showed the strongest interest in the player, have since sacked Thomas Tuchel, despite spending a stupid amount of money this summer.

And what will perhaps be music to Everton supporters’ ears, it seems as though their star boy is going to sign a new contract.

If that’s the case, then it will only top what has been a positive week for the club after they picked their first win of the season over the weekend.
