Bayern Munich legend Uli Hoeness has expressed his doubts about the ’very limited’ Robin Gosens, with the Leicester City target coming under fire despite an impressive Euro 2020 for Germany, while speaking to Sport1

While the likes of Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels fell short of their usually lofty standards as Joachim Low’s long reign ended in disappointment and dissatisfaction at this summer’s European Championships, we didn’t expect to see the blame placed on Gosens’ shoulders.

The Atalanta flyer had been one of Germany’s standout performers after all, ripping Portugal’s defence apart during a thrilling 4-2 victory in the group stages.

Even Jose Mourinho was singing his praises, labelling Gosens ‘amazing’ on the back of a performance that heralded his arrival on the international stage.

But Hoeness – a man who would make Mourinho look positively ebullient by comparison – was in no mood to jump on the bandwagon.

Is Leicester target Robin Gosens really a ‘limited’ player?

“He played only one game well because the Portuguese coach apparently did not know his name,” said the 1974 World Cup winner.

The autopsy is underway and it’s Hoeness holding the scalpel.

“In the other games he did not appear. The reason? Simple: he is a technically very limited player when things get serious.”

Given that Hoeness all-but consigned Toni Kroos to an early retirement – insisting that the Real Madrid play-maker has no place in modern football – we should probably take his stinging criticism with enough salt to melt the Antarctic.

According to reports in Italy, Leicester City made a £23 million bid for Gosens earlier in the summer, although it remains to be seen whether the Foxes get their man with the late-blooming 27-year-old keen to play in the Champions League next season.
