Speaking on The Overlap, Virgil van Dijk has been discussing Andrew Robertson and his rise through the ranks from Dundee United to Liverpool.

Robertson has been a true zero to hero story within football. He climbed the ladder from a middling Scottish club to becoming a Champions League winner.

Robertson, of course, arrived and made his name in England with Hull City, but his career path was nearly very different.

Indeed, according to van Dijk, the Scot could’ve ended up at Celtic, as the Dutchman actually recommended the left-back to the scouts at Celtic Park during his time at the club.

Robertson to Celtic

Van Dijk says he suggested Robertson to Celtic.

“Robbo is a fantastic player, a pleasure to play with, passionate,” Van Dijk said.

“He is one of the leaders in my opinion.

“He is the captain of Scotland and I played against him playing at Celtic when he was at Dundee.”

“Funny enough I was saying to our scouts that we should get him at Celtic.

“But he went on to Hull, but just in general playing with him has been incredible.”

Would’ve gone

Van Dijk says that Celtic should’ve gone for Robertson a few years ago, and he almost certainly would’ve joined.

Robertson is a boyhood Celtic supporter, and he’s even admitted in the past that he would love to end his career at Celtic Park.

If the Scottish giants had made this move back in the day, they almost certainly would’ve been able to get it over the line, and who knows what happens from there?

Does Robertson decide to stay at Celtic for the long-term after getting a taste of playing for his boyhood club? What does his arrival mean for the emergence of Kieran Tierney around that time?

One thing is for sure, Celtic should’ve listened to their centre-back about this transfer.
