The United States men’s national team have released an official statement after Folarin Balogun’s one-game ban was suspended.

Balogun was set to be suspended for the USA’s World Cup Round of 16 clash with Belgium on Monday night.

The striker was sent off for serious foul play during the USA’s Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina last week.

While most agreed the decision was harsh, and many complained online, the suspension was expected to stand.

However, FIFA have now suspended Balogun’s one-game ban for 12 months, allowing him to play against Belgium.

USMNT confirm Folarin Balogun’s availability for Belgium World Cup clash

FIFA have made the controversial decision to suspend Balogun’s one-game ban and make him available for the USA’s next match.

Balogun’s red card against Bosnia is the only case of a ban being suspended so far at the 2026 World Cup.

The USMNT no longer have to worry about how to replace their star striker, who has scored three goals in four games.

They wrote: “We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow.

“Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.”

Although football fans would always rather see the best players available for selection, many will find this decision frustrating.

Their argument will be that the hosts (the United States) have received preferential treatment as every other suspension has been served.

However, from a football perspective, it will be fantastic to see Balogun lead the USA’s attack against Belgium.

The winner will face either Spain or Portugal in a spectacular quarter-final match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
