The Belgian media has responded to Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension being overturned.

Folarin Balogun will be available to play for USA in the pivotal World Cup round of 16 game against Belgium.

Balogun was shown a straight red card in the round of 32 game against Bosnia & Herzegovina, following a VAR review.

Now the one-match ban has been ‘suspended for one year’, FIFA has confirmed in a statement.

The decision has brought delight to USA fans, who were desperate for the team’s star striker to play. Balogun has scored three goals so far at the tournament.

Donald Trump has also welcomed the big decision. But how do the Belgians feel about it, as they prepare to face Team USA in Seattle?

Belgian press react to Folarin Balogun decision

Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad was quick to report on the sudden news, noting that it will change the team’s preparations: ‘Rudi Garcia hadn’t factored this in’, they wrote in reference to the team’s manager.

They describe the decision as a ‘godsend’ for the USA, and report that the Belgian federation is examining whether this can be appealed.

They write: “The Red Devils are the victims of this. The football association is looking into whether it can still take action, but that chance seems rather slim. Balogun is therefore expected to be in the starting lineup.”

De Standaard also report that Belgium are considering their options.

“The Belgian Football Association has not yet officially responded to FIFA’s surprising decision. Nevertheless, the KBVB does not intend to simply accept the measure. The association is investigating what legal options are available to appeal the decision.”

VRT reports that Belgium believe Donald Trump’s political interference has been a major factor, with journalist Tom Boudeweel reporting that the US President has applied ‘enormous pressure’ to FIFA.

USA take on Belgium looking for revenge

The USA have history with Belgium in the World Cup, with the USMNT knocked out by the Red Devils in 2010.

The last 16 game required extra-time for Belgium to clinch a 2-1 win, despite the heroic efforts of Tim Howard, who made a world record 15 saves in one game.

Balogun’s suspension being lifted means USA will be at full strength as they look to exact revenge on home soil.
