Tottenham will be without Matt Doherty for the remainder of the season with the defender set to miss 12 weeks out due to a knee injury.

According to Football London, the 30-year-old right-back will not play for the rest of the campaign after Doherty was forced off with an injury after a sinister challenge by Matty Cash.

Although Tottenham went on to win the game 4-0 against Aston Villa, the loss of Doherty is massive for the north London side, with Antonio Conte getting the best out of the Republic of Ireland star in recent weeks.

The fullback has scored twice and assisted another two in Tottenham’s last five matches, and the loss of Doherty to injury for the season could have major implications for Spurs’ top-four hopes.

Indeed, with Arsenal losing their last two league games, Spurs have made some serious ground this week in their hopes to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, with Tottenham sitting comfortably in fourth.

However, with Doherty now out for the season and Tottenham having just Emerson Royal as cover in the position, Conte’s side could struggle in the coming weeks without the Irishman, who only joined the club in 2020 for a reported £15m.

With the defender finally finding his feet at Tottenham, things were looking up for Doherty in north London, however, this injury has come at the worst possible time for both the player and the club.

After all, with Spurs in control of their top-four dream, losing a key player like Doherty to a long-term injury is one of the worst things that could have happened to Conte’s side, and this blow could well derail the club’s entire plan of finishing in fourth spot.
