Tennis fans are in disbelief at Coco Gauff’s costly mistake in her Wimbledon semi-final defeat to Karolina Muchova.

The American attempted an unnecessary dropshot on match point in the third-set tiebreak and hit the ball into the net.

After Muchova struggled to return her serve, all Gauff needed to do was hit a forehand to either side of the court.

A relatively simple groundstroke would have booked Gauff’s place in her first Wimbledon final on Saturday.

Instead, the 22-year-old’s lapse in concentration led to Muchova winning the tiebreak 12-10 and reaching the final.

Tennis fans can’t believe Coco Gauff’s costly match-point error in Wimbledon defeat

Coco Gauff’s unforced error will probably be remembered as one of the biggest mistakes in Wimbledon’s 149-year history.

With a place in the women’s singles final on the line, Gauff tried an audacious dropshot that was completely unnecessary.

Wimbledon viewers were left stunned by Gauff’s shocking decision, which she will probably repeat in her mind for a while.

β€œI don’t want to imagine how many times this moment will be replaying in Coco Gauff’s head. The match was there; she likely overthought the shot,” an X user wrote.

Another tennis fan responded: β€œI am so disappointed with Gauff. What nonsense!!!”

β€œThis is INSANE and honestly silly to even attempt on a match point you fought back so hard to get to,” said another comment.

One posted: β€œCoco Gauff won’t sleep well tonight. Why even attempt a drop shot at match point?”

Meanwhile, a harsh critic described Gauff’s mistakes as the β€œunforced error of the DECADE.”

Although she should be proud of her overall performance, Gauff will most likely relive this memory until she puts it right.

Hopefully, the young star will have plenty more opportunities to reach the Wimbledon final and even win the title.
