Paul Merson has said that VAR got it spot when they decided to disallow the goal from Leandro Trossard to open the scoring for Arsenal against Leicester City.

This remains an unpopular opinion, as the decision to chalk the screamer off just because Ben White held Danny Ward in net has been widely deemed as soft. A number of fans and pundits alike, including Gary Lineker cannot make sense of the decision on Saturday afternoon’s clash, as refereeing decisions continue to disappoint week in and week out in the Premier League.

However, Paul Merson has an unpopular opinion as he feels VAR was bang on the money in their decision to disallow the goal from Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard against Leicester.

Perhaps the frustrating aspect for many is the fact that when it comes to such calls, there is almost never a sense of consistency in the decision-making from officials.

However, Paul Merson has said that he agrees with VAR’s decision to chalk the goal off Leandro Trossard for Arsenal against Leicester on Sky Sports.

“VAR, that is unbelievable. They can’t see a sending off, but they can see that. It’s a great spot, an unbelievable spot”, he said.

In our view: That was a soft decision

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and that applies to Paul Merson as well but in our view, Leandro Trossard and Arsenal should have been rewarded their opening goal against Leicester.

The contact made from Ben White on Danny Ward is minimal and the Foxes goalkeeper has made a meal out of the situation.

Such decisions can have huge ramifications on the title race, as both Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola’s side have often been the victims of poor officiating on far too many occasions in the 2022/2023 season, which is a shame.
