Alan Shearer has criticised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after the Arsenal captain was dropped from the squad for yesterday’s match against Southampton.

Speaking on Match of the Day via the Daily Mail, the record Premier League goalscorer sided with Mikel Arteta in his decision to punish the 32-year-old striker after reportedly returning late from a trip abroad.

According to the Athletic, Aubameyang granted permission to leave Arsenal for a personal trip abroad. However, the striker was home late and subsequently punished by not featuring for Saturday’s match against the Saints.

With Arsenal flourishing in attack in an impressive 3-0 win, Aubameyang’s presence was hardly missed. Yet the bombshell over the weekend will no doubt raise some serious questions over the Gabon international’s status within the club as well as his future.

Indeed, Aubameyang faced a similar punishment ahead of a north London derby, which Arsenal again won. And for Shearer, some serious questions need to be asked about the striker after breaking rules for a second time.

The Match of the Day pundit said: “It’s unacceptable. For the second time for it to happen. Once is not very good, for it to happen again and for his manager to come out and criticise him the way he did and tell everyone again he’s had to leave him out for those reasons. It’s not good enough.”

Latest Aubameyang episode could see striker leave Arsenal in January

Aubameyang’s latest setback was the centre of much debate from Arsenal fans both at the Emirates and on social media this weekend. And with the Gunners firing on all cylinders without their club captain and highest-paid player, plans could likely be in the making to offload the attacker in January.

Moreover, with Aubameyang being the oldest player in the squad and lacking in form this season, this action from Arteta could set off a chain of events that leads to Aubameyang departing north London next month. And it could be a decision that works out well for all parties.
