Tyson Fury has parted ways with his long-time trainer and says he’ll be getting ready for his next fight on his own.

The former heavyweight champion, who worked under Sugarhill Steward when he won his second world title in 2020, has decided to take a different approach for this latest comeback. This time, though, Fury has opted to go without a head coach.

“There will be no more trainers,” Fury said at a promotional event. “No head trainer or anything, so I am going old school. Back to basics.”

After spending several months in Thailand training and spending time with his family, Tyson Fury returned to London to come face-to-face with Arslanbek Makhmudov. The two met at a media event that drew press from across the globe.

During the build-up, when asked about his training plans following his split from Sugarhill Steward, Fury said he didn’t see a need for a head coach this time around.

“I’m like Clubber Lang,” Fury said during the Netflix broadcast of the pre-fight press conference at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. “I’m going to train alone.” Lennox Lewis added that Fury knows what to do given his experience, and Fury agreed.

“I know what to do, I know how to go 12 rounds, I know how to push myself when I need to but I also know when to take a rest when I need to. Boxing, people try to make it so much like rocket science but it’s not.

“As long as you train hard and eat well and get plenty of rest, I think the rest of it if you’re experienced like I’m an experienced veteran in this game sometimes you need people to point stuff out to you and remind you of certain aspects.

“But what I don’t know about my own body now, I’m never going to know.”
