Rangers continue their preparations for the new season when they face Tranmere at Prenton Park tomorrow and there was a return to familiar surroundings for Steven Gerrard as the Gers trained at Liverpool’s training ground in Kirkby – and fans on Twitter keen to make sure Gerrard wasn’t kept there by his old club.

The Light Blues took to social media to thank Liverpool for their hospitality before the clash with Mickey Mellon’s side, with Gerrard heading back to the former Academy.

Since Gerrard was there as part of the Academy coaching staff at Liverpool, there has been a massive change to the Reds’ facilities with a huge expansion to also bring Jurgen Klopp’s first-team under the same roof.

As well as Gerrard, a number of his Rangers backroom staff have also been on the payroll at Liverpool as have first-team stars Ryan Kent and Andy Firth.

The opportunity to train at Kirkby makes a lot of sense with Rangers taking on Tranmere tomorrow and Liverpool’s first-team yet to return for pre-season.

With Gerrard back on home turf, fans joked they fearful the Anfield side may have tried to keep him there after a stunning season at Rangers last term.

Here are some of the comments from Rangers fans on Twitter after Gerrard returned to Liverpool:
