According to a poll conducted on social networking site Twitter, 68% of the Sheffield Wednesday fans who participated want striker Atdhe Nuhiu to remain at the club beyond this summer.

The 6ft 6inch striker’s contract at Wednesday is due to expire this summer, and with plenty of competition for places at the club, there is a general feeling that Nuhiu will depart Hillsborough.

The seven-capped Kosovo international joined the Owls from Rapid Wien in 2013 on a free transfer, and he topped the club’s scoring charts in the 2014/15 campaign with 11 goals.

Despite not being blessed with pace or outstanding technical ability, Nuhiu – nicknamed Dave by the Wednesday fans – has become an icon among supporters for his passion and fight for the cause.

The 28-year-old’s strength and height makes him an imposing figure upfront, and an excellent option to bring off the bench when either chasing the game or to utilise his hold-up play when seeing out a positive result.

Wednesday have an abundance of forwards on their books, what with Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper, Jordan Rhodes, Lucas Joao, Sam Winnall, Steven Fletcher and Nuhiu all vying for a first-team spot.

At least two will have to leave this summer to clear wages or make way for transfer funds so that new boss Jos Luhukay can begin to shape his own squad, and Nuhiu is an obvious choice with his deal set to expire.

But a large majority of Wednesday fans polled would prefer to see him stay on, with other recent polls suggesting that fans would much rather see the likes of Fletcher (poll) and Rhodes (poll) depart in his place.

He may never be good enough for a team challenging for promotion, yet it is obvious Nuhiu is a popular figure for the Owls and it is arguable that he has more to offer than some of his higher-paid teammates.

Whatever happens, Wednesday fans can brace themselves for several departures this summer as changes must be made if they once again wish to challenge for promotion back to the top-flight following a lengthy absence.
