Tim Sherwood has slammed Pedro Porro and Ivan Perisic who he thinks are ‘incapable’ of playing as fullbacks for Tottenham Hotspur.

On Sunday, Tottenham, who have since sacked caretaker manager Cristian Stellini, took things up a level by, not only just losing 6-1 to Newcastle United, but going 5-0 down inside 20 minutes.

It was beyond humiliating for the managerless club, with fullbacks Pedro Porro and Ivan Perisic taking the brunt of the blame.

For over 18 months, the north London club have been used to playing in a back five, including deploying wing-backs.

But, against Newcastle, all of that was changed up by Stellini, in order to turn the club’s form, with a back four being deployed – he ended up changing it all after 20 minutes.

It caused absolute havoc for Tottenham and Sherwood let rip at two of their players who are ‘asking for trouble’, as he told Premier League Productions (23/04/23 at 4:15 pm).

“I said before the game, it’s okay going to a back four, but you need two fullbacks who want to defend,” said Sherwood. “They got exploited down the sides time and time again.

“It’s schoolboy defending (for Newcastle’s second goal). Look at Pedro Porro. He has no idea where he is, just bends his (Joelinton) run, a fantastic pass, a wonderful touch, sits Lloris down and then tucks it away beautifully.

“But the defending. Pedro Porro and Perisic aren’t fullbacks! They are wing-backs, at best. If you are going to ask them to defend, then they are incapable of doing it – With Perisic and Pedro Porro as your fullbacks, then you are asking for trouble.”

PORRO IN THE FIRING LINE AGAIN

There was a lot of hype when Spurs managed to get the Porro deal over the line in January, but as of now, it has proven to be a signing to forget.

In his very first game, Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat to Leicester City, Sherwood was already firing shots at the Spain international.

Well, fast forward to the present, and from a defensive standpoint, he just can’t seem to cope or understand how to stop runners, as he proved against Newcastle.
