Both Celtic and Rangers were reportedly interested in Defoe.

Trevor Sinclair has suggested on Twitter that Celtic should have completed a move to sign Jermain Defoe ahead of Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.
Defoe, 36, has joined Rangers on an 18-month loan deal from Premier League side AFC Bournemouth, that will see him spend the rest of this season and the entirety of the next campaign at Ibrox.
The former West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland star is reunited with former England teammate Gerrard, and is currently with the Gers squad on their training camp in Tenerife.
Former England winger Sinclair – who played alongside Defoe at West Ham between 1999 and 2003 – believes Defoe should have moved to Celtic instead of Rangers, after being linked with both clubs.
A report from the Sunday Post claims Celtic wanted to sign Defoe in the summer, and other outlets linked the Hoops with Defoe this month before he completed a move to Ibrox.
Sinclair has made his love of Celtic publicly clear, with his Mother’s Irish heritage making him a Celtic fan – and has even admitted he wished he had played for the Hoops during his playing career.
Rangers and Celtic are both undergoing training camps in Tenerife and Dubai respectively, and will return ahead of January 19’s Scottish Cup matches. Rangers take on Cowdenbeah, while Celtic face Airdrieonians.
