According to Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, Rangers are interested in a move for Ross Barkley after he was let go by Chelsea.
The Scottish giants are certainly no strangers to taking a gamble on a talented midfielder who is perceived to be over the hill – they brought Aaron Ramsey in on loan last season, and Barkley may view a move to Ibrox as a great chance to reignite his career.
On his day, Barkley was one of the best midfielders in England – but don’t just take our word for that, former Gers manager Steven Gerrard has previously given Barkley his seal of approval.
What’s been said?
Writing for the Daily Mail after retiring from international duty, Steven Gerrard named Barkley as a player who could have been the future of the England team.
“He has got the potential to be world class. I was impressed with him from the moment he stepped into the senior ranks and he has the perfect body to be a midfielder — he is big, strong and well balanced; dynamic and skilful. Ross has got a tremendous temperament, too,” Gerrard wrote.
The new Gascoigne
Barkley may have been out of sorts in recent years after failing to make an impact at Chelsea, but he has the potential to be an absolute cult hero at Rangers.
Barkley was often compared to Paul Gascoigne during his early days at Everton, and he could follow in Gazza’s footsteps by becoming a star at Rangers.
Failing to make an impact at Chelsea doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not an incredible player – just look at the likes of Mo Salah and Kevin De Bruyne, and while Barkley will never be at that level, he doesn’t need to be in order to become a gem for Rangers.
Barkley may never reach his world-class potential, but if he came to Rangers he could rediscover his love of the game and show, once again, just how much talent he has.
