Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers want to sign Ross Barkley from Chelsea ahead of Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic in the summer transfer window, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The well-known and well-respected journalist has written on Patron that Rangers have joined the race for Barkley and hope to persuade the £200,000-a-week (The Sun) attacking midfielder to move to Ibrox by offering him UEFA Champions League football.

Rangers will play in the UEFA Champions League, and so will their Old Firm rivals Celtic, who won the Scottish Premiership title last season and are also interested in signing Barkley this summer.

Earlier this month, well-known and well-respected journalist Simon Phillips told GiveMeSport that Celtic are among the clubs keen on the 28-year-old English playmaker.

Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove Albion and West Ham United are also reported to be interested in Barkley.

Rangers join Celtic in race for Chelsea’s Ross Barkley

Nixon wrote in Patron, as relayed by IbroxNews: “Rangers are looking into a deal for Chelsea outcast Ross Barkley – with the chance of offering him a crack at the Champions League.

“The Scottish giants are keen on midfield schemer Barkley and may have a real shot at landing him before the window shuts.

“Chelsea are looking to shift Barkley and could even free the former England midfielder.

“It would take a huge pay off to let Barkley go but new owner Todd Boehly may make an offer to let him move on.”

Could a transfer happen?

In our opinion, both Rangers and Celtic could be dealt a blow in their quest to sign Ross Barkley from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Yes, there is speculation that the Blues could hand a huge pay-off to the former Everton star and let him leave on a free transfer.

And Barkley could even decide to lower his salary, but would Chelsea or Rangers still be able to convince him to move to the Scottish Premiership which is nowhere near the level of the Premier League?
