Tottenham Hotspur appear to be closing in on landing Paulo Fonseca as their new manager – but there’s another potential boss in the mix.

Duncan Castles has claimed on the Transfer Window Podcast that Spurs are working on a potential deal for Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui.

It may now come down to Fonseca or Lopetegui for the job, and Sergio Reguilon may well be left hoping for the latter.

Reguilon’s dismal end to the season at Tottenham

Jose Mourinho splashed out £27million to sign Reguilon from Real Madrid last summer, and he started well with great attacking play.

Yet by the end of the season, Reguilon looked completely devoid of confidence, with his comical own goal against Aston Villa merely the tip of the iceberg.

Shaky in possession, caught out of position all too often and looking like a shadow of his former self, Reguilon ended the season dismally and fans may fear it will continue into next season.

Lopetegui can save him

If anybody can rescue Reguilon at Tottenham, it’s Lopetegui. After all, he worked with Reguilon at Real Madrid and then signed him for Sevilla.

Lopetegui remarked that Reguilon was developing at a ‘barbaric rate’ under his tutelage, whilst Reguilon claimed that Lopetegui has been the biggest influence on him as a player and as a person.

Lopetegui seems to just understand Reguilon on and off the pitch, and whilst Tottenham wouldn’t appoint a manager just to appease the Spanish left back, it would certainly be great news for him if his compatriot is appointed.
