Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has claimed that Tottenham are now eyeing up Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui as a candidate for their manager job.

Tottenham’s search for a new manager has been so complicated up to this point, and it seems as though they’re looking at some new names.

What’s been said?

Castles said that Tottenham are now working on a move for Lopetegui.

“I hear that there is an additional candidate that they’re working on in the shape of Julen Lopetegui, who could be a solution for them if they can’t get one of their earlier choices. Lopetegui is liked by Tottenham and is likely to be recommended to them by Paratici, he certainly has a good track record of work at Sevilla, winning the Europa League in 2020, and finishing third and fourth, getting them into the Champions League two years running,” Castles said.

Interesting

Lopetegui would be such an interesting appointment.

On one hand, he’s got an absolutely brilliant CV. He’s a former Real Madrid and Spain manager, and as Castles said, he’s done a cracking job with Sevilla.

However, he didn’t do the best of jobs with Real Madrid, being sacked after less than three months and he left the Spain job in a controversial fashion.

If Spurs can work towards the right project for the Spaniard, he could be an inspired appointment, but given his track record at big clubs, this has to be seen as something of a risk.
