Tottenham want Sporting Lisbon right-back Pedro Porro after the Spain ace starred against Spurs in the Champions League this season – but if they sign him, surely it will highlight a mistake made by Pep Guardiola and Manchester City.
Porro joined Sporting Lisbon on a two-year loan in 2020 from Manchester City. He starred for Ruben Amorim’s side, and it saw the Portuguese champions decide to buy him permanently in the summer. Sporting paid City £7m for Porro.
Coming into the season, he has nine goals and nine assists in 72 games – and his form has continued following his the permanent move. Indeed, he has laid on five assists in his 16 games this time around. He was excellent against Spurs.
Notably, in North London during the 1-1 draw – shining in the first 45. Now, Jornal de Notícias claim Spurs want to sign the right-back. But given he never actually made his Manchester City debut, has Guardiola and City made a mistake?

Tottenham need a right-back. Emerson Royal is not good enough, Matt Doherty is inconsistent in terms of form, game time and indeed, injuries. Djed Spence is still a rookie and learning his trade under the guidance of Antonio Conte.
But Porro is needed to replace Royal, who is the clear weak link in Tottenham’s side. But the fact that Spurs want to sign him, and that he is in superb form for Sporting on the Champions League stage shows he deserved a City chance.
Or, that City should have charged a whole lot more cash to sell Porro to Sporting. Certainly, if Spurs are going to sign the defender, he will cost a whole lot more than the £7m Sporting paid in the summer to nab him from Pep’s City.
