Tottenham have now been told that a bid of €30m (£26m) could be enough to sign Alex Meret from Napoli.

What’s the story?

Well, it was La Repubblica who claimed that Spurs want to sign the Italy international as Antonio Conte attempts to find a replacement for Hugo Lloris, who has been below par this season.

At first glance, the deal seems quite difficult to negotiate, as Meret finds himself starting weekly in between the sticks for Napoli, sitting comfortably at the top of Serie A by a 12-point margin.

However, Italian journalist Ciro Venerato believes Tottenham have a good chance of signing the Napoli No.1 if they make an offer worth £26m.

As quoted by Tutto Napoli, he said: “Should an important offer ever arrive in the summer, I don’t exclude that Alex could also leave.

Even if Napoli’s intention is to renew Meret’s contract, trying to satisfy his requests as far as possible, Napoli always have the threat there, because the contract expires in 2024, but within it they have a unilateral option to extend it until 2025. Should Tottenham, however, have a proposal of €30m (£26m), we could even think of selling Alex.”

As Venerato states, the 25-year-old’s contract will only have 12 months remaining at the end of the season, although Napoli have an option to extend his deal by a further year.

Despite that option, an offer of £26m could still be tempting enough for the Italian giants to sell.

Meret would be a fine signing from Tottenham

If Spurs can negotiate a £26m deal with Napoli, then it would be superb business for a goalkeeper who is very highly rated.

The Italian glovesman has kept ten clean sheets in 26 appearances so far this season, conceding just 22 goals in those outings as Napoli look set to win the Serie A title.

Meret has also been likened to Gianluigi Buffon by Antonio Di Natale, which speaks volumes about his ability.

At the age of just 25, the Tottenham target also has many years left at the top level, as well as plenty of room for improvement on his already impressive level.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Spurs continue to monitor Meret’s situation.
