Tottenham are reportedly interested in luring Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to North London in the summer after making a bid worth more than £17m in January – and La Razon say they may include Bryan Gil in a deal to get Bounou.

Nicknamed Bono, the 31-year-old has impressed at Sevilla since joining the club in the summer of 2020. He has since kept an impressive 56 clean sheets in 128 games. Then, in Qatar, Bono was crucial in Morocco reaching the semi-finals.

Spanish newspaper AS reported earlier this week that Tottenham had actually made a bid for Bono last month. Tabling a fee believed to be worth north of £17m. Nothing materialised, but interest in Bono is set to remain until the summer.

Now, a report from La Razon states that Spurs might actually use Gil in a deal for Bono. Prior reports from Spain claim his release clause is worth £44million. While it is unlikely he could cost that much, Gil may be used by Spurs in a deal.

Of course, Gil is back at Valencia – the club he came through at academy level. He is on a dry loan at Sevilla from Spurs, after the London club bought him from Sevilla for a fee of £21.6million and Erik Lamela. Clearly, Sevilla like a swap deal.

There is no doubting that Spurs need a new goalkeeper. Hugo Lloris is widely expected to leave the club at the end of the season. Even if he remains, Spurs need a replacement and Bounou would certainly be an improvement on Lloris.

But is the kind of calibre goalkeeper Spurs need – or should they be aiming for better? Arguably, the latter. A solid shot stopper, but not massively comfortable with the ball at his feet. To lose Gil to bring in Bounou would be a big mistake.
