Spanish newspaper AS report that Tottenham made a bid of more than £17m to sign Sevilla and Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou in January – and while a move did not occur, they are likely to retain an interest ahead of the summer.

Nicknamed Bono, the 31-year-old has impressed at Sevilla over the last couple of years. Joining the La Liga club in the summer of 2020, he has been first choice – winning 56 clean sheets in 128 games in a side that also boasts Erik Lamela.

At the World Cup, he was the backbone of Morocco’s incredible campaign – which saw the African nation reach the semi-finals in Qatar. The Canada-born stopper played in six of Morocco’s seven games, keeping three clean sheets.

It saw interest in Bono ramp up during the winter window. Spurs are expected to be on the lookout for a replacement for Hugo Lloris at the end of the season, with the Frenchman believed to be in his final season as Tottenham captain.

The report from AS claims Spurs actually made an offer of more than £17m to sign Bono in the January window. But, a move did not materialise. However, Antonio Conte’s side remain interested and could reignite a move in the summer.

While he is a good goalkeeper, is he the kind of top-level option that Spurs need to be pursuing if they are to bring in a replacement for Lloris? He is in that bracket just behind some of Europe’s best, while Lloris is arguably, in the top.

Spurs have also been linked with the likes of Jordan Pickford – and England’s no.1 would be a wonderful addition. But if they cannot get Pickford then a move to lure Bounou to North London does make sense. He would not cost much.
