Tottenham Hotspur right-back Matt Doherty is on the verge of joining Atletico Madrid on January transfer deadline day, according to Marca.
Matt Doherty to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Atletico Madrid
The Spanish publication has claimed that La Liga club Atletico have agreed a deal with Premier League club Tottenham over the transfer for Doherty.
The Republic of Ireland international right-back, who cost Tottenham £14.7 million (The Guardian) in transfer fees, will move to Atletico as soon as Felipe completes his transfer to Nottingham Forest.
Sensible move?
In our view, Matt Doherty leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Atletico Madrid makes sense.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers stat is not getting much time at Spurs under head coach Antonio Conte at the moment, so there is no point in him wasting his time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Moreover, Spurs are about to bring in Spanish right-back Pedro Porro.
Atletico are a massive club, and Doherty could flourish in Spain.
Remember, Kieran Trippier, now at Newcastle United, joined Atletico not so long ago, and he won La Liga with them.
Now, Atletico are not going to win the league title this season, but they have a very competitive team and Doherty would enjoy his football in La Liga.
