Danny Murphy has told TalkSPORT (Wednesday, 12.05PM) that it is “bizarre” that Tottenham want to sign Pedro Porro without selling “one or two” of their current options at right wing-back – comparing Chelsea’s “scatter gun” approach.
Spurs’ weakeness is at right wing-back. Emerson Royal has been jeered on and off the pitch before and after the World Cup. The Brazil star has been poor ever since the defender joined the club from Barcelona in the summer of 2021.
As things stand, it is believed that Sporting want Spurs to pay Porro’s release clause of around £40million – as per 90 Min. But Tottenham do not believe Spain international Porro is worth the entirety of his release clause, this month.
Having heard Spurs want to sign Porro, ex-Tottenham midfielder Murphy gave his opinion. He says it is bizarre that Spurs want to sign another right-back in the form of Porro – urging his old club to sell one or two current options first.

“They’ve got three right-backs. I know that [none of them are great]. It’s bizarre they’re trying to sign a fourth. We’re talking about Chelsea’s recruitment being scatter gun, why would you not try and get one or two out the door before.”
Murphy: Bizarre that Tottenham want to sign Porro, compares Chelsea
Antonio Conte is not convinced by any of Tottenham’s three options – in Royal, Matt Doherty or Djed Spence. Royal’s form has been woeful. Doherty is a good back-up right-back, but injuries have hampered his progress at Tottenham.
Spence needs a loan. A potential star, but a rookie – and not a Conte signing. So, Tottenham’s best move is to sell Royal this month, bring in Porro, keep Doherty as cover and loan out Spence. Will it happen? No movement, yet.
But it might be that as we edge closer towards the end of the January window, Spurs kick into gear. It might be that they have to give in Sporting’s demands. Then, with Porro onboard, Royal could then be tempted to leave the club.
